Old Age Security (OAS)
Canada Pension Plan (CPP)
Do you have to plan for retirement in Canada?
According to a survey*, 90% of people in Canada do not plan for an ideal retirement life in the future. In 2030, the average life expectancy in Canada is expected to be 83.9 years for men and 87.1 years for women**. How can we start to prepare for a retirement life in Canada?
What exactly is an ideal retirement life?
Would you like to have trips every year after retirement or spend time for vacation in warmer places for Christmas? Do you wish to go for sailing in summer or go for skiing during winter? Do you hope to live in a better nursing home in your later days? How much money is enough for your ideal retirement life?
Many people in Canada believe that with the current pension system, there is no need to worry for their retirement.
Old Age Security (OAS)
As one of the most popular pensions, Old Age Security (OAS) would be paid out by government since the age of 65. If you want to live abroad after retirement, you must reside in Canada for more than 20 years before the age of 65 so to get OAS. If you want to live in Canada after retirement instead, in order to get OAS, you would need to reside in Canada for more than 10 before the age of 65.
Moreover, the longer you live in Canada, the more OAS you will receive after age 65. However, if you move to Canada in your 40s or 50s, OAS monthly payout will be reduced proportionally. The maximum monthly OAS for Canadians is about 613 CAD in 2020. The maximum age at which OAS can be withdrawn is 70 years old.
Canada Pension Plan (CPP)
If you and your employer make contributions to the Canada Pension Plan (CPP) during employment, you can start withdrawing CPP every month from the age of 65 until you are 100 years old. In 2020, Canadian nationals withdraw an average of about 679 CAD CPP per month. You can start to withdraw CPP at the age of 60, or latest at the age of 70.***
Statistics on retirement cost in Canada
According to a 2016 survey, retirees in Canada spend an average of about 31,332 ^CAD a year, which is about 2,611 CAD a month.
Ignoring inflation, we assume you will receive 613 CAD of OAS and 679 CAD of CPP per month after retirement. It also means that you will have to withdraw a total of 1,292 CAD per month from your person savings as living cost after retirement.
This is just a very generic calculating the average cost of retirement, and this calculation would have a certain gap when compared to your ideal retirement life. We have also excluded inflation in the calculation. At the time of your retirement, the actual monthly living cost would most likely be higher.
With universal healthcare in Canada, you may believe that the living cost would be lower at your later days. However, we need to realize that an ideal Nursing Home in Ontario currently costs around 26,000 CAD a year, which is around 2,166 CAD a month.
Savings habits of Canadians
According to a survey, Canadians wish to save about $756,000 for retirement. The following are the details of the relevant findings^^:
However, the research also shows that for people in their age range of 45 to 64, the average savings for retirement is only 345,000 CAD, of which 32% do not have any relevant reserves, and about half of them have saved less than $250,000.
In fact, the government has provided us with many savings tools which encourage everyone to prepare for retirement. In the next article, AC Wealth will get into the details about these tools and we will share how to use these tools to prepare for a worry free future.
